The short answer
It depends on what the price includes. A DIY builder costs little upfront but takes your time; a custom build costs more and should include copywriting, local SEO, forms wired to your inbox or CRM, and fixes after launch. Our six-page build is AU $2,997 + GST, copy included, live in 10 to 15 business days.

Ask five web designers in Australia what a website costs and you will get five very different numbers. That is not because anyone is hiding something. “A website” can mean a template you fill in yourself, or a site that is written, designed, built for search and wired into how you sell.
This guide explains what drives the price of a small business website in Australia, the Australian details that change what you actually pay and own, what our own build includes, and what to check before you pay anyone.
What actually drives the price
- Number of pages. Five or six pages (home, services, about, proof, contact) cover most service businesses. Every extra page adds design, copy and testing.
- Who writes the copy. Copy is the part most quotes leave out, and the part that decides whether visitors enquire. If you have to write it yourself, the site usually takes months, not weeks.
- Template or custom design. A template is faster and cheaper; a custom design fits your brand and your buyers.
- Functionality. Bookings, calculators, e-commerce and member logins each add build and testing time.
- Local and AI search. Clean structure, schema markup, speed and pages that name the suburbs you serve decide whether Google ranks you and whether AI assistants like ChatGPT can quote you.
- Ownership and ongoing costs. Who owns the domain, hosting and site, and what you pay each month after launch.
The three ways Australian businesses usually buy a website
A DIY website builder. A monthly subscription and a template. Low cash cost, but you write, design and maintain everything, and you rarely own the site outright.
A template site from a freelancer. Faster than doing it yourself. Check whether copywriting, SEO setup and fixes after launch are included, because they often are not.
A custom build from an agency. The most complete option when it includes copy, search setup and integration with your forms and CRM. Compare quotes on what is included, not just the headline price.
Australian details that change the real price
GST: with or plus?
GST is a tax of 10% on most goods and services sold in Australia, and a business must register for it once its GST turnover reaches $75,000 (business.gov.au). That is why one freelancer’s quote has no GST on it and an agency’s quote says “+ GST”. Put every quote on the same footing before you compare: a $2,997 + GST quote is $3,296.70 all in.
Your .com.au domain
A com.au is for businesses with a connection to Australia, and the most common way to qualify is an active ABN or ACN. The name also needs a connection to your business, such as your business name or a service you offer (auDA). Make sure the domain is registered to your business, not to your web designer, so you can move the site whenever you like.
Your rights if the build goes wrong
Under the Australian Consumer Law, services must be carried out with due care and skill, be fit for the purpose stated and be supplied in a reasonable time where no timeframe was agreed (business.gov.au). Since 1 July 2021, a business buying services up to $100,000 can count as a consumer, and these guarantees cannot be excluded (Queensland Government). A website build sits well under that threshold, so read any “no refunds” clause with that in mind.
Forms, consent and the Spam Act
If your enquiry form leads to marketing emails or texts, the Spam Act 2003 applies: you need the person’s permission before sending commercial messages, and anyone who unsubscribes must be removed within 5 working days (business.gov.au). A good build makes the consent part of the form, not an afterthought.

What to ask before you pay anyone
Before you sign, ask who writes the copy, who owns the domain and hosting, whether the price is with or plus GST, what happens after launch, and how the site will be found on Google and in AI answers. Our free guide, Nine Questions to Ask a Web Designer, walks through each one. To talk it through, call us on 0421 311 308 or book a call. If you also want the site marketed, our Growth Partner runs the ads, SEO and reporting with the same team.
Website cost in Australia: common questions
How much does a small business website cost in Australia?
It depends on what is included. Our six-page website costs AU $2,997 + GST as a one-off build, with the copywriting, search setup, forms and 30 days of fixes included.
Is GST included in website quotes in Australia?
Not always. Australian GST is 10%, and some quotes show prices with GST while others add it on top. A business only has to register for GST once its GST turnover reaches $75,000, so some freelancers do not charge it. Our price is AU $2,997 plus GST.
Can an overseas company register my .com.au domain?
It can manage the registration, but a com.au is for businesses with a connection to Australia, most commonly through an active ABN or ACN, and the name must connect to your business. Make sure it is registered in your business name.
Do consumer guarantees apply to a website build?
Generally yes, where you count as a consumer: since 1 July 2021 that includes a business buying services up to $100,000. Services must be carried out with due care and skill and be fit for the purpose stated, and these guarantees cannot be excluded.
How long does it take to build a small business website?
Our builds go live in 10 to 15 business days from content in hand, with two rounds of revisions during the build.
Do I own my website?
With us, yes: the domain, hosting and site are set up in your name. Ask every provider this before you sign.
